Typically, fat cells are harvested from the lower abdomen or outer thighs. Fat grafting is considered an outpatient procedure but the recovery process will vary for each individual. When limited areas are injected, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with the patient awake. When the entire face needs to be injected as is common with advanced aging or when performed during facelifts, sedation or general anesthesia if required to make it comfortable. Some patients may have a lengthier recovery period than others depending on the areas of the extraction and transfer. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and redness are all normal but these symptoms will subside in the weeks that follow. Strenuous activity that is likely to significantly raise blood pressure should be avoided for at least three weeks after surgery. Direct pressure over the injected areas is also avoided for about 2 to 3 weeks. Detailed post-operative care instructions will be provided after the procedure.

Fat grafting is performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Smaller volumes of fat injection to the cheeks or lower eyelids can be performed in the office under local anesthetic. During the initial consultation, Dr. Solomon will determine the area from where the fat cells will be harvested. The fat cells will then be extracted by utilizing a specific liposuction method. Once the different components are centrifuged, the purified fat will then be placed into a syringe and injected into the designated treatment area. Although fat injections can be done to any area of the body, the common areas include the face, breasts, hands, and buttocks. This procedure is often used in conjunction with a facelift to correct volume loss in the cheeks and temples. Besides, fat grafting also rejuvenates the overlying skin, producing a youthful appearance.
