A major cosmetic surgery procedure such as breast augmentation will involve a series of steps. Different surgical techniques are available to perform this procedure, but the choice of technique will not make a difference to your overall surgery steps. Your surgeon will customize the procedure to meet your unique anatomical and cosmetic needs.
During your pre-op consultation, your surgeon will explain all the procedure steps to you. Once you are more familiar with how the breast implant procedure is performed, you will feel more confident and will be able to make the right decisions.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthias Solomon provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in Dallas, Frisco, Sherman, Texas, and surrounding locations.
Anesthesia
Once you are moved to the surgery room, you will be placed under anesthesia. Breast implant plastic surgery may be performed using general anesthesia, which will be administered by an anesthesiologist or a qualified nurse anesthetist. They will remain present in the operating room throughout the surgery to monitor your response.
Nausea, grogginess, and other mild side effects of anesthesia may linger on for a few hours, after which you may be allowed to go home. You should have someone who can safely drive you back home. You also may require aftercare for the first one or two days.
Placing the Incisions
Following anesthesia, your surgeon will place incisions in discreet locations to reduce subsequent scarring. The location for the incisions could be under the breast fold, in the underarm area, around the areola lines, or even in the navel area in exceptional cases.
During your initial consultation and surgical planning, the surgeon will determine the location and size of the incisions. They will take into account your breast anatomy, the size and type implants selected, and your personal cosmetic goals. The surgeon will obtain your inputs at every step during the breast implant plastic surgery planning.
Implant Placement
Your surgeon may place the breast implants below the chest muscle or above it, depending on the surgical plan. They will determine the implant placement after assessing the implant size and your unique breast anatomy. They will discuss with you the pros and cons of each placement option so that you can make the best choices.
Incision Closure
Once your breast implants have been placed and adjusted into position in the breast tissue, the surgeon will close the incisions using traditional or dissolvable sutures. Your surgeon may place temporary drain tubes under the incision areas to collect excess fluid. You should keep the incision site clean and dry to reduce your infection risks during recovery.
Bandages and Surgical Bra
After the surgical procedure is completed, your surgeon will wrap the incision site in bandages. In the next few days, they will replace the bandages with a surgical bra, which you must wear for several weeks to provide extra support to the breasts. Make sure you follow the post-operative care instructions during your recovery period for best results.
